Side Lifter Trailer Design Features

Lifting Cranes– Also known as crane modules. These are hydraulically powered cranes that lift the cargo/container either from the ground, another vehicle, a loading dock, a railway wagon or straight from the top of another container placed on the ground from any other platform as listed above. Lifting is possible on and off the chassis. The cranes are normally located at the top of the Sidelifter Chassis and are usually able to move along the chassis that is being shifted through the hydraulic motors or the hydraulic cylinders in order to load different container and cargo lengths.

Driving Power Unit– Typically, the cranes are powered through a trailer mounted diesel or gasoline engine. However, the cranes can also be powered through a PTO from the tractor or the truck.
Stabilizing Legs. These are hydraulic legs that are used in the lifting of a fully laden shipping containers while keeping the vehicle in position. They prevent the vehicle from tilting. The stabilizing legs can be adjusted to aid operations on uneven ground and enhance greater margins of safety and load limits when stacking the containers. The legs can be extended and tilted to provide extra capabilities when containers are lifted in confined locations such as on trailer decks.

Chains. There are chains attached from the upper part of the cranes to the corner castings at the container base when performing lifting operations. There is a special connecting device that when placed between 20ft container makes it possible for the user to lock together two 20ft containers. This allows the side lifter to haul them as though they were one 40ft container.

The Cab/Tractor. This is used to pull the trailer. In some scenarios, it supplies power via the PTO. This accessory also supplies compressed air for the brakes in the wheels of the side lifter. Usually, the side lifter cannot be operated without connecting it to the tractor. This is so because even though the power pack is carried by the side lifter, the tractor provides the much-needed compressed air for use on the trailer brakes and also extra stability during the lifting operations.

Chassis. The chassis is an important construction. It manages the weight of the loaded cargo/container. More than that, it supports the cranes.

The Remote Control. This is a device that is operated with buttons and joysticks and are basically attached through a multi-pair electric wire or through a radio signal. This allows the driver operator to move around the container and have a view of the unit from different angles when conducting the lifting operation.

Container transfer – The process of transferring a container from a side lifter to a flat-topped or skeletal truck is straightforward. When the stabilizers are extended, there is sufficient room for the chosen trailer to back into position under stabilizers during loading. If not, the stabilizers can be let low once the flat-topped or skeletal trailer has been positioned alongside. Normally, there is more than 300mm clearance present on each side of the transferring trailer.
There is a faster turnaround time from the beginning to the end. The process is also faster even when the side lifter is already loaded with a container.
Load can be transferred to a Quad axle trailer linked to a four-axle tractor without the need to jack knife the adjacent truck and the Quad axle trailer.
Most importantly, the lift modules do not need to place the stabilizer legs on the adjacent trailer for purposes of stability. The side lifter trailer can handle containers of up to 9’6’ high.

Stability– The side lifter trailer has a wide span for the stabilizer leg and the outboard jib pivot that provides quick and safe operations even under difficult settings. Due to this high stability, the side loader is in a position to lift a considerable weight of up to 45 tonne balanced containers even under undesirable conditions. The center of container gravity is about a meter within the stabilizer support line. This is the most stable position you will ever find in the market. However, there are other options that have the center of container mass outside the stabilizer support line. This makes the set up less stable.

Control– Side lifter trailer can be remotely controlled using a radio remote control. The compact, user-friendly control operated using one hand and composed of a handheld pushbutton control unit enhances safe working conditions for the operator. With the control system, you can move both the lift modules using a single button operation using tow depression levels at quick speeds for a fast operation. Still, you can control a slow speed when doing accurate and precise positioning of your containers. You can also get a fully proportional control system that comes with a handheld toggle remote control system that makes it possible for the operator to directly manage the direction and speed of the crane movement.

Working Space – The container side lifter gives you the possibility of working in limited space conditions. The original leg over option has particularly been designed and proven against failure during both loading and offloading operations in restricted spaces. Through this capability, you can easily place your container against a wall.

Payload carrying capabilities– The range of container side lifters available in the market can give you side lifters that can manage a great payload capacity to work on your job faster. This is made possible through the ultra-high-tensile chassis and lift modules that are lightly-designed and well-engineered in a remarkably low tare weight.

How do Side Lifter Trailer work?

Loading: Side lifter trailer has a set of hydraulic arms or lifting forks that extend from the side of the vehicle. These arms are capable of lifting heavy loads, such as containers or long beams, directly from the ground or from an appropriate loading platform. The arms are adjustable to accommodate different load sizes and weights.

Lifting: Once the load is secured onto the lifting arms, the hydraulic system is engaged, and the side lifter trailer lifts the load upwards. This lifting mechanism can raise the load to a sufficient height for transportation, reducing the need for additional lifting equipment.

Maneuvering

Side lifter trailer are equipped with wheels or tracks that allow them to move in different directions. They can be driven forwards, backwards, or sideways to navigate through tight spaces, such as warehouses or shipping yards. This maneuverability is achieved through hydraulic controls that control the movement of the wheels or tracks.

Transporting

Once the load is lifted and the side lifter trailer is positioned correctly, it can be driven to its destination. Some side lifter trailer are designed for road travel, while others are used within a confined area, such as a shipyard or construction site.

Unloading

When the side lifter trailer reaches its destination, the hydraulic arms lower the load to the ground or a suitable unloading platform. The load is then released, and the side lifter trailer can move on to the next task.

A: Container lifting equipment exists in many types including reach stacker, forklift truck, empty container handler, ship-to-shore container crane, rail mounted gantry crane, rubber tyre gantry crane, and portal slewing crane, meeting your unique need in terminal management.

Q: What equipment is used to lift containers?

A: Forklifts are an essential piece of equipment in most manufacturing and warehousing operations. While they are mainly used for moving general materials over short distances, a high-capacity forklift can also be used to lift and move empty and lightweight shipping containers if needed.

Q: What is a side lift crane?

A: The sidelifter loads and unloads containers via a pair of hydraulic powered cranes mounted at each end of the vehicle chassis. The cranes are designed to lift containers from the ground, from other vehicles including rolling stock, from railway wagons and directly from stacks on docks or aboard container ships.

Q: Which side does a sideloader unload?

A: A side loader truck will pick up your container on each end and then lower it onto your site directly next to the vehicle. It can only be unloaded on the drivers' side, so it is vital to consider how the container will be loaded onto the vehicle.

Q: What is the height clearance for a sideloader?

A: Need an opening of at least 2.9m. The lifting arms need approx. 6.5m in height while unloading. This needs to be considered when unloading near / under powerlines, trees or inside factories.

Q: What is the legal weight for a 40 container on the road?

A: The general limit for gross weight in the United States is 80,000 lbs for a 40-foot long container. Directly following guidelines put forth by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration will give you the best chance of success on the road.

A: A container chassis, also called intermodal chassis or skeletal trailer, is a type of semi-trailer designed to securely carry an intermodal container.

Q: What is the most appropriate method for lifting heavy containers?

A: Cranes are the most common lifting equipment used for shipping containers, and they can handle containers of various sizes and weights. The two primary types of cranes used for container lifting are mobile cranes and gantry cranes.

Q: How do you lift a container without a crane?

A: The most effective way to move a container without a crane or forklift is by using a tilted bed trailer. You will need to ensure that there is enough space for it to back up straight into the unit.

Q: How to move a shipping container without heavy equipment?

A: This means they don't need any additional equipment or heavy equipment to put it on the ground. Note that tilt bed trucks need a lot of space to put the container. The ground must also be dry, strong, flat and even.

Q: Should a crane be used for a side pull?

A: Side pulling is a common practice. However, this is also a well-known cause of damage to hoists and injury to personnel, sometimes resulting in death. OSHA prohibits the practice of using cranes and hoists to pull or drag a load sideways and hoist manufacturers do not rate their standard hoists for side pull either.

Q: How does a side loader work?

A: A sideloader does exactly what its title suggests. It loads and unloads from the side of the machine. Instead of the forks being located in front of the equipment like on a standard forklift, a sideloader's forks are located on its side.

Q: What is the height of a side lifter trailer?

A: Several points need to be considered when using this type of truck for delivery: The height of the container on the truck is 4.2 metres. You need to allow at least this height when going under powerlines/trees, eves of houses/factories or through doorways.

Q: What is the difference between a side loader and a rear loader garbage truck?

A: An automated side loader only needs one operator, whereas a traditional rear load garbage truck may require two or three people, and has the additional advantage of reducing on the job injuries due to repetitive heavy lifting. Due to these advantages, ASLs have become more popular than traditional manual collection.
