Advantages of Semi-Trailers

Cost-Efficiency: High cargo capacity reduces the number of trips needed, optimizing transportation costs.

Flexibility: Their modular design allows for easy swapping of trailers, enabling quick changes in cargo types.

Scalability: Tractor units can haul multiple semi-trailers in a single trip (e.g., road trains in Australia).

Maneuverability: The articulated connection improves navigation in tight spaces compared to rigid trucks.

Components of Semi Trailer

Frame: The structural backbone of the trailer, typically made of steel to withstand heavy loads.

Axles and Wheels: Several axles and wheels distribute the weight evenly, ensuring stability while the semi-trailer is in motion.

Suspension System: Helps absorb shocks and vibrations, ensuring a smooth ride for the cargo.

Braking System: Connected to the tractor unit, it allows the driver to slow down or stop the trailer when necessary.

Body: The cargo-carrying section of a semi-trailer, which can be either enclosed or open, depending on the type of goods being transported.

Types of Semi-Trailers

Cement Semi-Trailers
Cement semi-trailers, also known as bulk cement trailers or powder trailers, are specifically designed for transporting cement, fly ash, lime, and other powdered materials. These trailers are equipped with a pneumatic system that uses compressed air to discharge the cement from the trailer into storage silos or other containers. The unique design of these trailers allows for efficient and safe transportation of bulk cement, preventing contamination and reducing the risk of spills.

Flatbed Semi-Trailers
Flatbed semi-trailers are one of the most common types, featuring a flat, open deck without any walls or roof. These trailers are ideal for transporting large, bulky items or goods that can withstand exposure to the elements.

Refrigerated Semi-Trailers

Refrigerated semi-trailers, also known as reefer trailers, are designed to maintain a specific temperature range during transportation. They are essential for transporting perishable goods, such as food and pharmaceuticals.

Fuel tanker semi trailer

Fuel tanker semi-trailers are designed to transport liquids and gases, such as fuel, chemicals, and milk. They feature a cylindrical tank body and are built with materials that can withstand the specific contents being transported.

Lowboy Semi-Trailers
Lowboy semi-trailers have a unique design with a lower deck height, making them ideal for transporting oversized or tall cargo. Their low profile allows for the safe and efficient transport of heavy equipment, such as construction machinery and industrial components.

Dry Van Semi-Trailers

Dry van semi-trailers are enclosed trailers designed to protect goods from the elements and potential theft. They are commonly used for transporting consumer goods, electronics, and other items that require a secure, enclosed environment.

The height dimensions of a semi-truck

To place a semi-truck's height in perspective, a large SUV is about six feet tall. With that being said, a semi-truck clocks in at a whopping 13.5 feet tall.
At 13.5 feet, semi-trucks can clear many tunnels and other roadways with overhead height limits.
Due to the height dimensions of the semi-truck, as a driver, seeing other roadside drivers can be a challenge. If you find yourself driving next to one of these 18-wheeler motor vehicles, give yourself plenty of distance between yourself and the truck.
Doing so will keep both you and the truck driver safe on the road now and in the future.

FAQ

Q: How much does a semi weigh?

A: That answer varies a lot depending on the make and model of the truck as well as the engine in the truck. Day cabs (the ones without beds) generally weigh around 15-16,000 pounds, around the same as two adult Asian elephants. Small sleepers (the flat roof ones) are about 1,000 pounds more. That's like putting a polar bear on those elephants. Large sleepers can weigh over 18,000 pounds.

Q: Do they use a tow hitch?

A: Nope! The trailer attaches to the truck with a large pin, called a king pin, that's usually 2-3 inches thick sticking out of the underside of the trailer. Imagine a water bottle-sized solid steel pipe. The king pin goes through the fifth wheel, a big horseshoe-shaped piece of metal on the back of the truck, and clamps lock it in place. Tow hitches just wouldn't be strong enough to pull a full trailer. Fifth wheels also bring the weight of the front half of the trailer right over the back wheels, making it easier to pull tall, heavy trailers.

Q: How tall are they?

A: Semi trucks are between 6.5 and 10 feet. The height depends on whether the truck has a higher roof on the sleeper, or a roof cap. The roof cap is a curved piece coming over the roof of the truck to make it more aerodynamic. Many day cabs have tall roof caps, allowing air to flow smoothly up the front of the truck and across the top of the trailer.

Q: How much weight can a semi truck pull?

A: They pull anything over 26,000 pounds. But the maximum for many trucks is actually road weight limits. In every state, 80,000 pounds is the limit for all vehicles. That's the equivalent of 26 Prius cars! The weight also depends on the type of trailer.

Q: What kind of trailers can they pull?

A: Dry van trailers are the typical rectangular box you see on the road. They are used for shipping lots of consumer goods like clothes, toys, electronics, books and more.
